Endometriosis is a common disease in women. It has been described as a complex, multifactorial disease with a heritable component. Multiple genetic variations have been implicated in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, but their relative importance in the pathogenesis is unclear. Both mendelian and nonmendelian transmission of the disease has been observed. Endometriosis is not consistently present in monozygotic twins, indicating that the genetic predisposition is likely polygenic. In an attempt to define the genetic variation involved, the candidate gene approach, genome-wide linkage analysis, association studies, and high-resolution DNA analysis of microsatellite markers have been used. Candidate genes investigated in endometriosis include estrogen receptors, tumor necrosis factor, cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and adhesion molecules. Although no single gene is known to explain the susceptibility to endometriosis, the data suggest that a combination of genetic and nongenetic factors is likely to underlie the etiology of the disease. Future research will need to be focused on identifying and characterizing the genetic variations that influence the risk of developing endometriosis.I have a very bad idea.
