A widely accepted view is that in the "New" World, where traditional diets were less deficient in fibre, the diet of people could be associated with a reduction in pathogenic bacteria. These preformed probiotics may reflect the ancient, ecological evolution of the gut flora. In the "Old" World, where diets were more deficient in fibre, a lack of probiotics is believed to have been more prevalent. This may have led to the emergence of more pathogenic bacteria, which are more commonly found in the Old World. The view that the diet is an important factor in gut ecology has led to the concept of a "Western type" diet. The 'Western diet' has been associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal disease. It is also hypothesised that the western diet may alter the gut microflora favouring the growth of pathogenic bacteria, resulting in an increased risk of gastrointestinal disease. It is also possible that this western diet may have favoured the evolution of these pathogenic bacteria, as a result of the low fibre diet, which could lead to changes in the normal, indigenous gut flora. In this paper, the dietary factors which influence gut ecology are discussed, with a brief outline of the methods available to study the gut microbial flora.Canadiens left with big hole on blue line

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens played an upbeat, youthful team at the Bell Centre on Wednesday night but they had the offensive punch of their missing blue-liners - and none of their other current defensemen - at the Canadian Tire Centre.
The Canadiens opened the 2012-13 season with a spirited 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in their pre-season opener, but the only real test is the one that's coming next Wednesday when they play host to the Nashville Predators.
"They have a lot of talent, a lot of depth, a lot of skilled forwards," said Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher. "When they're playing together, they're a dangerous team. That's what we need to try to do and beat their ac619d1d87
